THE EXPERIENCE

Distance from the road changes the photograph.

The BWCA slows the entire process down. We will work from a remote basecamp, wake for still-water mornings and allow wildlife, mist and night sky to shape the schedule.

The small group keeps canoe travel manageable and instruction personal, with an emphasis on working quietly, protecting equipment and making deliberate photographs from unstable or low viewpoints.

WHAT YOU'LL PHOTOGRAPH

Loons, water-level compositions and wilderness light.

The route and daily rhythm remain flexible around weather, safe paddling, wildlife behavior and the strongest available light.

Aurora, glassy water and close wildlife encounters depend on natural conditions and are never guaranteed.

HOW THE TEACHING WORKS

See the decision. Build the frame. Carry it forward.

01

Field decisions made visible

I explain why we wait, move, change lenses, simplify—or abandon—a frame as light and weather change.

02

Feedback at your camera

With four participants, you receive specific coaching on composition, exposure, focal length, focus and filters, adjusted to your experience and goals.

03

Review what worked

Guided image reviews connect field choices to stronger selects and practical processing decisions, so the learning carries beyond this location.

A FLEXIBLE THREE-AND-A-HALF-DAY EXPEDITION

Built around weather, water and wildlife.

Arrival night · Meet and prepare

Minneapolis–Saint Paul International Airport pickup, transfer to the Gunflint Trail lodge, lodging, gear check and trip briefing.

Day 1 · Paddle in and settle

Outfitter check-in, paddle to basecamp and an evening shoreline or canoe session.

Day 2 · Work the full wilderness rhythm

Pre-dawn launch, loon and reflection opportunities, midday review and sunset or night photography.

Day 3 · Deepen the work

Pre-dawn photography, quieter compositions, individual coaching and a final night in camp.

Final half-day · Photograph and exit

One last early session, camp breakdown, then paddle and portage out with the outfitter plan controlling the exact timing.

GUIDED BY BRIAN BIELKE

Landscape-first. Personal. Built from experience in the field.

I work beside you in camp and on the water, demonstrate how I read the light, and give specific feedback on composition, exposure, focal length and the frame you are building. With only four participants, the group can travel quietly and instruction can remain personal.

COMMON QUESTIONS

Know what to expect.

How much canoe experience do I need?

You should be comfortable entering, exiting and paddling a canoe in changing conditions. The route is selected for safe small-group travel, but paddling and portaging may occur in wind, rain and uneven terrain.

Are loons or the aurora guaranteed?

No. We build the schedule to improve the opportunity, but wildlife, solar activity, clouds and wind remain outside our control.

What equipment is included?

Canoe, PFD, paddle, tents, permits, wilderness meals, shared cooking and safety equipment, and the arrival-night lodge stay are included. Sleeping bag and sleeping pad rental is optional; the pre-tour trip packet identifies required personal clothing and camera gear.

What is the cancellation policy?

More than 60 days before the workshop, your deposit may be transferred once to another 2BPhotographyMN tour taking place within 18 months. Within 60 days, all payments are nonrefundable. If 2BPhotographyMN cancels or the three-participant minimum is not reached, all payments are refunded.
