THE EXPERIENCE

Light turns working farmland into abstraction.

We will use elevation, sidelight and weather to simplify the Palouse into rhythm, tone and form. The small group lets us move patiently among overlooks and farm roads, returning when the light deserves another look.

This is composition-first fieldwork: we study what the light is doing across the land, test focal lengths and refine the frame before the moment disappears.

WHAT YOU'LL PHOTOGRAPH

Rolling hills, lone trees, barns and weather.

The route stays flexible so we can follow light and field conditions instead of repeating a fixed overlook checklist.

Access remains on public roads and approved viewpoints; working farms and private property are respected.

HOW THE TEACHING WORKS

See the decision. Build the frame. Carry it forward.

01

Field decisions made visible

I explain why we wait, move, change lenses, simplify—or abandon—a frame as light and weather change.

02

Feedback at your camera

With four participants, you receive specific coaching on composition, exposure, focal length, focus and filters, adjusted to your experience and goals.

03

Review what worked

Guided image reviews connect field choices to stronger selects and practical processing decisions, so the learning carries beyond this location.

A FLEXIBLE FOUR-DAY PLAN

Built around light, weather and field access.

Day 1 · Learn the visual language

Arrival orientation, first field session, focal-length choices and an evening built around sidelight.

Day 2 · Work the classic layers

Dawn patterns, telephoto studies, midday scouting and a sunset location chosen around weather.

Day 3 · Find quieter frames

Barns, roads, lone trees and graphic details beyond the obvious overlooks.

Day 4 · Refine and finish

Return to the strongest opportunity, individual coaching and a final field session.

GUIDED BY BRIAN BIELKE

Landscape-first. Personal. Built from experience in the field.

I work beside you in the field, demonstrate how I read the light, and give specific feedback on composition, exposure, focal length and the frame you are building. With only four participants, instruction can respond to your experience, questions and the conditions in front of us.

COMMON QUESTIONS

Know what to expect.

How much walking is involved?

Most locations use short approaches from established roads or viewpoints. The greater demand is long field days and time in the vehicle between opportunities.

What lenses are most useful?

A telephoto lens is central to the Palouse. A normal zoom and wide angle are also useful for broader weather, barns and environmental context.

Are specific overlooks guaranteed?

No. The route changes with weather, field conditions, access and the strongest available light.

What is the cancellation policy?

More than 60 days before the workshop, your deposit may be transferred once to another 2BPhotographyMN tour taking place within 18 months. Within 60 days, all payments are nonrefundable. If 2BPhotographyMN cancels or the two-participant minimum is not reached, all payments are refunded.
